Game making in Iraq

 Game making in Iraq

When people hear "game development," they think of big studios in America, Japan, or Europe. But guess what? You don’t need to be in Silicon Valley to make games — even in Iraq, it’s possible. I know, because I’m doing it.

As a student in Iraq, I didn’t have expensive gear, fancy courses, or even fast internet all the time. But I had something stronger: curiosity and motivation.

I started with a simple laptop and downloaded free tools like:

  • Unreal Engine (AAA-quality and totally free)

  • Unity (great for mobile and simple games)

  • Godot (lightweight and open-source)

These tools made me realize something important:

Game development is not about where you are — it’s about what you’re willing to learn.

Iraq Has Talent, Just Not Enough Support

There are creative, passionate young people in Iraq who can make amazing games. The problem? We don’t have:

  • Local studios to guide us

  • Strong communities to share ideas

  • Enough encouragement in schools or media

But that’s changing — slowly. And we are the ones who can change it.

What You Can Do Today (Even as a Student)

You don’t need a gaming PC to start. You can:

  • Watch YouTube tutorials in Arabic or English

  • Join free Discord groups for beginners

  • Build a simple 2D game — even Pong or Flappy Bird

  • Share your progress on social media to inspire others

My Advice: Start Small, Dream Big

If you're reading this from Iraq or anywhere similar, know this:

  • You don’t need permission to create.

  • You don’t need a perfect setup.

  • You just need to start.

Game development isn’t impossible in Iraq — it’s just underrated. Let’s change that together.
