How to Start Game Development in Iraq (With Zero Money)

A lot of people in Iraq think making games is only for rich countries or professional coders. But that’s not true anymore. In 2025, anyone with a laptop and internet can become a game developer — even if you’re just a student.

I know because I started that way.

🎮 What You Need to Start

You don’t need to buy anything. Here’s what you need:

✅ 1. A Basic Laptop

You don’t need a gaming PC. Even a budget laptop can run beginner-friendly tools like Godot or Unity (2D projects).

✅ 2. Internet Access

Even if your internet isn’t the fastest, you can:

  • Download game engines once, then work offline

  • Watch YouTube tutorials at 480p

  • Use free forums like Stack Overflow or Reddit

✅ 3. Time + Curiosity

Instead of spending hours scrolling, give yourself 1 hour a day to learn. That’s all it takes to begin.

You can make your first game with zero coding using tutorials. Later, you can learn C#, GDScript, or Blueprint (in Unreal).

📚 Best Free Resources (Even for Iraq)

  • YouTube channels like:

    • Brackeys (Unity)

    • HeartBeast (Godot)

    • Unreal Sensei (Unreal)

  • FreeCodeCamp.org

  • GameDev.tv (look for their free courses or discounts)

  • Join Discord groups like “Godot Engine” or “Indie Devs”

🇮🇶 Why Iraq Needs Game Developers

We have stories to tell. Imagine a horror game in Baghdad. Or a war survival game based on real events. We can create experiences no Western developer can.

We don’t need to wait for opportunity — we can build it.

🔚 Final Thoughts

If you're in Iraq and you want to make games, don’t let fear or doubt stop you. Start small. Be consistent. Ask questions. Make mistakes. And most importantly — have fun.
